MESA Competitions
Speech/ Pitching Ideas
Have you ever wanted to pitch a MESA Competition to MESA staff/judges? Here
is your chance! We are looking for a team that has an innovative STEM
Competition that can be piloted in the next MESA Day Competition. This competition is called MESA Think Tank.

Civil Engineering (Bridges)
Students will use math and science to implement engineering concepts in the design
and construction of a model bridge from their own plans that will carry a maximum
load while using as few craftsticks as possible; stressing neatness, craftsmanship,
and creativity. This competition is called Stick Together.

Computer Science
Teams will design and create an interactive video game using Scratch to demonstrate knowledge of core programming principles within the designated time limit. This competition is called Scratch It Up!

Mechanical Engineering
Students will design and construct a complex machine that utilizes three to six different sequential and dependent actions from three different energy/simple machine categories that will ultimately launch a vinyl kick ball the farthest distance in the least amount of time. Students must design their machine to be transported by bus or car. This competition is called The MESA Machine: Ball Launch.

Biomedical Engineering
Students will design, construct, and operate a simulated prosthetic arm that can accurately throw as many bean bags into the Target Zone as fast as possible. This competition is called Prosthetic Arm.

Aeronautical Engineering
Students will design and construct a glider that, when launched by the official MESA launcher, flies through the air and lands on a target located in front of the launcher. The target will be identified by a colored dot on two pieces of blue painter’s tape that intersect to form a + symbol on the ground and is located 12.2meters (40 feet) away from the launcher’s hook (once released). The glider must bethe original work of each team. Judges may ask questions for verification. This competition is called Wright Stuff Glider.

National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC)
MESA USA presents the National Engineering Design Competition specifications for the 2019-2020 year.Arduino-based Solutions for Humans asks students to implement the Human-Centered Design approach to find a client in your community who has a need, engineer a solution for this need using Arduino as the key component, and present your solution and recommendation(s) for next steps at the MESA USA National Engineering Design Competition.

Math Escape Challenge
Students will work in teams of two to three to solve challenging performance and/or problem-based real-world problems using general mathematics skills and techniques. Through collaboration, teams will solve a series of non-routine problems requiring creative deductive and reasoning skills to “escape” the quickest.

Lego Robotics
Robotics is a test of engineering design, as well as programming and strategy. Autonomous robots try to compete against each other towards a particular task. The 2019-2020 Lego competition is to be determined.
